Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a drone survey and an aerial photograph?

An aerial photo is a single image from above. A drone survey is hundreds of overlapping photos processed via photogrammetry into a 3D point cloud, orthophoto (geo-referenced map), digital elevation model (DEM), and measurable 3D mesh. Surveys enable volume calculations, contour mapping, and BIM comparison — photos do not.

How long does a drone survey take for a typical construction site?

A 10-hectare site takes 30–45 minutes of flight time + 2–4 hours of processing. A 100-hectare site takes 3–4 hours of flight + 8–12 hours of processing. Same-day deliverables (orthophoto + rough point cloud) are standard; refined outputs (contour maps, volume reports) delivered within 24 hours.

Can drone surveys measure earthwork cut/fill volumes?

Yes, with high accuracy. Comparing two surveys (before and after excavation) yields cut/fill volumes accurate to ±2–3% when GCPs are used. This is the standard method for monthly earthwork progress claims. Reports are exportable as PDF or directly into earthwork accounting software.

What deliverables come with a drone site survey?

Standard deliverables: geo-referenced orthophoto (GeoTIFF/KMZ), 3D point cloud (.LAS/.LAZ), digital elevation model (.TIFF), contour map (DXF/PDF), and a 3D mesh (.OBJ/.FBX). Optional: BIM-ready IFC file, volume reports, comparison report vs. previous survey, and online web-viewer link.

Does ViewKeeper handle flight permits for restricted sites?

Yes. Permit acquisition is part of our service. For sites near airports, military zones, or critical infrastructure, we secure MOI/GACA approvals — typical timeline 7–14 business days. Pre-approved annual permits for recurring surveys reduce delays for long-term projects.
